Dover Exit;
Getting off on the Hwy 4 exit right outside of Topeka will take you through some beautiful country on the Native Stone Scenic Byway, but these first few miles have a lot of turns that could be annoying if you have a bigger RV or Camper. If you wait until the Carlson Rd exit, you will have a straight shot down to Hwy 4 and come out a just past the town of Dover, swing back a few hundred yards to pick up Byway info, or head on down Hwy 4 towards Eskridge, KS and the Jewel of the Flinthills, Lake Wabunsee.
Alma Exit; Highway 99
I think this is one of my favorite drives in the state of Kansas. Head North a few miles on Highway 99 to the touristy town of Wamego and check out the Wizard of Oz Museum, Then head back down south on 99 to the mecca of limestone architecture, Alma, KS. Pick up some cheese curds and stay a night at the park ($15 w/electric) before heading down one of the most beautiful and "sporty" stretches of highway in the Flinthills. Almost the entire way is lined with native limestone fences, rolling green hills, picturesque barns and green pastures. You may think you have been transported to Ireland. Meet up with Highway 4 just past Wabunsee Lake, and pop in for a gourmet meal or some kayaking.
Highway 177; Alta Vista
If you are looking for a less curvy alternative to Highway 99, 177 is a good option. This is the last exit to really experience the Flinthills of Kansas. This route cuts straight south over a dramatic sweep of rolling hills that will give you a great first glimpse of the open skies and dramatic vistas that await you on your Western adventures. Head to the Alta Vista for some of the best biking anywhere, or keep going another mile and hop on Highway 4 just south of Alta Vista. If you have time, consider a short jaunt down to Council Grove for a deep dive into the Old West Experience.
